Your Country

Do you live in the United Kingdom? Then that's your nation. Sometimes people call it Britain, or Great Britain, or the UK, or else they say they live in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, which are all parts of the United Kingdom. For a long time Ireland was part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. During this period the Kings and Queens of Britain were also the Kings and Queens of Ireland. Now only a small part - Northern Ireland - is part of the UK. When we talk about England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland altogether we call it the United Kingdom, or the UK.

Do you see the 'flower map' of the British Isles? Many countries use a flower to represent them. Can you see the rose of England, the daffodil of Wales, the thistle of Scotland, and the shamrock of Northern Ireland and Ireland? Which country do you live in and what is the flower that represents it?

Even though it is an island, the United Kingdom is part of the continent of Europe. There are other countries on the continent of Europe. Can you think of any? To the south of Britain, on the other side of the English Channel, is the country called France (can you see part of it in the bottom right-hand corner of the map?). To the west of Britain, on the other side of the Irish Sea, is the country called Ireland. Do you see it in green on the map? Many people think of the colour green when they think of Ireland because the plants are quite green with all of the rain that they receive! Each one of these countries has different leaders, different rules, and different flags. But all three countries are on the same continent of Europe, along with many other countries that we will continue to learn about in other activities.
